Installing Attic Insulation

Attics are a key heat loss area in the home that can offer substantial savings on electricity bills when properly insulated; sometimes as much as 30% of heat loss in a home occurs through the roof of a house – this is money that can eventually be saved by installing good quality attic insulation.

While installing good quality insulation may seem expensive, with some prices starting at around €500 for a three bedroom home, it is estimated that most installations will pay for themselves in as little as three years.

There are however energy saving grants available to some homeowners through the SEI Warmer Homes Scheme, so it would be advisable to see if your home is covered before carrying out any work.

There are various types of attic insulation including;

  • Sheep’s wool
  • Rock Wool
  • Fibreglass
  • Cellulose
  • Eco insulation

Each of these insulation materials require a certain amount of energy to produce so it is of benefit to the environment to try to use the most eco-friendly solution. Sheep’s wool, for example requires much less energy than Rock Wool to produce.

Its important to ensure you properly insulate and ventilate your attic while also maximising the storage space left available for your home.

There are a host of good guides available on the web that will make the job much easier, here a few:
